Picture of the Day: Aurora Borealis in Your Backyard

No need to go to north to see northern lights!

There is a warning this evening of a massive geomagnetic storm tonight that threatens to affect power grids, communications and navigations systems.

Caused from a dramatic blast from the sun, the storm is the strongest to reach Earth since October 2003.

However, the upside is that people as far south as Florida and Southern California can see the aurora borealis, or the northern lights.

Indeed this evening on social media, lots of people in Vancouver posted pictures of the aurora borealis so I went out into my backyard just after midnight to take a look. The iPhone's sensor in the camera is more sensitive to wavelengths produced by the aurora and can produce an image that cannot be seen with the naked eye.

So I snapped a few pictures and indeed I got this amazing shot!
