The government is severely punishing young people -- teenagers -- for their idealistic folly.
Young people are severely punished for pro-independence |
Five teenagers who were part of a pro-independence group have been sentenced under the national security law to up to three years in detention at a correctional facility for abetting an "armed revolution" to overthrow local and state governments.
The five were among seven defendants convicted by a judge who was chosen by the chief executive to rule on national security cases.
The convicted students are a lesson to others |
One of them who was 15-years-old at the time of the arrest, is the youngest person to be convicted under the national security law.
The five will undergo vocational training and development programs at the detention centre for up to three years.
The group had called themselves the "embers of revolution" that had 20 members who organised 13 street booths and press conferences, and operated three social media accounts between January and May last year, allegedly with the goal of overthrowing Beijing and the Hong Kong government.
During the raid, national security police confiscated an array of weapons and protesting equipment, when they raided the group's storage room in Cheung Sha Wan, and the defendants' respective homes.
NSL was enacted on June 30, 2020 |
But who would dare even attempt to do anything subversive now?
Once they get out of the detention centre, what are their job prospects? No wonder young people are leaving the city in droves...
