Surprising Facts about Slugs

Came across this giant specimen yesterday

On my walks in Pacific Spirit Park I've been coming across a lot of slugs lately.

Probably because there's a lot of precipitation these days, but there are some interesting facts about them!

* They like to live underground or under damp vegetation

* Slugs have both male and female genitalia, so if they don't find any suitable mates, they can impregnate themselves! If two slugs mate, they impregnate each other with sperm. The result is each slug can lay up to 100 eggs several times a year, so a slug could have some 90,000 descendants during its lifetime!

* They have 27,000 teeth, which they use to basically grate their food to eat it. Slugs also regularly lose and replace teeth.

* Slugs can eat 40 times their weight in one day!
