Picture of the Day: Ocean Spray

Ocean spray are blooming in Vancouver

These flowers are called ocean spray, with the Latin name holodiscus discolor. A prolific contributor to the neighbourhood email discussion board pointed out they were in bloom in a nearby park so I checked them out.

On closer inspection they are very tiny white flowers that are clumped together and look like mini floral chandeliers. The flowers attract hummingbirds, bees, butterflies and other pollinators. The other day I saw a bee spending a lot of time in them.

Doing a bit of research, there are seven to 10 species of holodiscus, from British Columbia all the way down to Bolivia!

It's also good to know these plants are drought-resistant and are pretty hardy.
